Help Stop FISA Today

Posted by IT Pilgrim on July 7, 2008

Please help stop the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act today. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the Senate will vote on the new Amendments for 2008. Among them is immunity for having provided the government with whatever they want on their customers without a warrant. So, basically, it is an admission that the law was broken and now the government wants to provide them with immunity for having broken the law.

See the summary of the 4 Hour Work Week, its a good summary.

Please take a moment to call or e-mail your senator today:

Think what you say matters?

Posted by IT Pilgrim on June 12, 2008

Sad PuppySeems like a lot of our generation thinks we are defined by the words we say. Well, I hate to burst anyone’s bubble, but what you do matters more. Social media activism is great, and has its place, but I have to ask, when is the last time you actually did something? Have you ever actually rescued an animal, or picked up litter? Have you ever actually DONE anything significant?

What is it that defines a man?

For the sake of simplicity, let’s take that to mean man or woman, there’s really not that much difference anyway, at least for this discussion. So, moving on, what defines a man? Is it what he says? What he does? Is it who he is, or what he is? Or perhaps, all of the above? Let’s take those one at a time:

What you say
Is it the words that come out of your mouth that define you as a person. If a stranger were to describe you, would they describe you by the things you have said? Do your words change the world around you and move mountains? Let me say this a different way, if you were defined by your words, how powerful would they have to be? If so, does every word you say count, including those words you said to that hypermiler you passed in traffic? Don’t words that move mountains usually require some sort of action to take place?

What you do
How about the things you do, do those matter. That guy you cut off in traffic because you were too busy and late to notice… did you stop to think about how you affected his world? Statistically speaking, more people of working age commit suicide on Sunday than any other day. What have you done to contribute to that. The things you do invariably affect everything around you, in traffic, in the line at the coffee shop, or just walking down the hall at work. That’s a lot of baggage to bear, but just because we haven’t acknowledged it does not mean it does not exist. That is why I assert that you are what you do.

Who you are
By who you are, I mean are we defined by what people think we are. Are you the sum total of what other people think of you? Is that really how you want to be defined, or all that you are? I hope not. I think that being defined that way is nothing short of tragic.

What you are
Are you defined by what you are? Some people let what they are define them as a person, be it by race, national origin, or sex. Sometime, as an IT worker, they try to single me out as “the girl” but I refuse to be pigeonholed that way. I am not defined by what I am, that can be such a narrow definition of a person.

So I ask again, what a defines you? I like to believe that we each have to decide that for ourselves. We each have to decide what it is that will define us, and maybe it should be a little of each, the words you say, the things you do. I think the real question is, what are you going to let define you?
