Still Fighting With Total Immersion Swimming

Posted by IT Pilgrim on October 20, 2008

Gave up and got the other DVD, Total Immersion Freestyle, which made it easier. I was getting somewhere, then promptly got sent on the road and am fighting with trying to find an indoor pool in DC. If anyone know of one, preferably within walking distance of the metro, hopefully they’ll be so kind as to holler at me. They don’t have my chain of gym here, so anything goes. Hmm I think the company should pay. Can’t you just see that expense report discussion?

Sigh. Such is life I guess. At least the Presidential debates are over, so maybe people on the subway will stop talking to me about it, and I can stop trying to hide my oh-so-controversial views. Two things I have learned to never talk about, unless I KNOW how a person will react, Religion, and Politics, or at least, not if I have to work or live with person. Somehow, the old line of, “I am the same person I was 5 minutes ago,” never quite does it.

Down With Wet Hair: Updated

Posted by IT Pilgrim on August 19, 2008

OK, today continues my quest to end wet hair after swimming laps. Since I destroyed my knees riding horses, and dislocated a shoulder, with the requisite tendon damage, I swim. Since I have semi-long hair, it DOES NOT fir under a standard swim cap. So I am going to figure it out. If anyone already has this one figured, please feel free to let me know, but I Googled it several times and asked around, and no one had a good answer.

For now, I have this cheapy one, which was the only thing I could find at the sporting goods store, I had to special order my goggles (the kind for people who see as well as bats). ordered one of those old style swim caps, the ones that look like something out of the forties, and its a no go. This one. I even went to the local swim shop and they helped me get the right size. I might as well have just dunked my head in, it was useless. I think that my hair is too long or thick still. Its not really that long, only to mid-back, but my braid is as big around as a man’s arm, so I have a lot of hair. It just doesn’t squish down enough.

Playing with Total Immersion Swimming

Posted by IT Pilgrim on August 18, 2008

The other day I ran across Tim Ferriss’ article on Total Immersion Swimming. It was a bit of a riot because I had just requested the Freestyle DVD from Netflix the day before, and I got an IUO for a different DVD for my birrthday (last Sunday). It made me feel much better that I am not the only one in the world who swims about a centimeter an hour. I did not know why, I just knew I had a problem.

I am a child of the “just throw them in” generation, which is how I learned, just like I learned to ride horses (by falling off) its the same concept. Nothing teaches you faster than a sore bum! So this week, I am trying out some of the stuff from the dvds. Haven’t gotten the book yet, since my rural location makes library usage next to useless, maybe it will show up on paperbackswap. In the comments, the author of TI swimming also posted a link to the free PDf he has available, so I have linked it here.

As a side note, anyone else always get IOU s for birthday/christmas presents?

Down With Wet Hair

Posted by IT Pilgrim on August 11, 2008

OK, today begins my quest to end wet hair after swimming laps. You see, my company likes to say that they support employee fitness, but really, that’s a line of crap. In order to go to the gym, I sneak out “for lunch” and try to sneak back in without anyone noticing how long I was gone. I more than make up the hours so I don’t feel any guilt. However, its kinda hard to be sneaky about it when your hair’s wet.

For now, I have this cheapy one, which was the only thing I could find at the sporting goods store, I had to special order my googles (the kind for people who see as well as bats). I will order something else and get back, in case any inquiring minds want to know. Let the research begin …..
